Beware the Batman? Or ignore him entirely?
Guess what I watched recently? Beware the BAAATMAN! Was it as bad as everyone thought it was? Not entirely.
The controversy over Beware the Batman started long before the cancellation of fan favorites Green Lantern and Young Justice. The new CGI show was first announced at the conclusion of Batman the Brave and the Bold followed by a teaser trailer showcasing the new art style. A poster featuring a radical looking Alfred wielding a gun, Katana and Professor Pyg and Mr.Toad, who are new villains created by Grant Morrison and first featured in Batman and Robin (2009).
I'll be as objective as I possibly can so when I say I liked the premise of the show, the theme, but hated Batman's design - he looks like a twink; and it's not because I'm butthurt over Young Justice being cancelled. Nope. Not in the slightest do I..care. Ok, that is a deciding factor for the likeablity of this series, but don't let that cloud your judgment.
The very first scene of the show was dramatic, we were introduced to Batman apprehending some petty thieves. Since this is a kids show, the guns the robbers were totting around were fantastical, being multicolored and resembling a toy gun. The show's creators also stated that guns were present, but they won't be realistic so the show could be aired on Cartoon Network and not give children a bad impression. As if children these days haven't seen it all.
This Batman now relies more on detective work than the previous incarnation, except the Bruce Timm Batman, God bless that truckin' good series.
Gotham city is very familiar, but is plain in terms of design. We have blocks without much detail and that's a city. The sky is blood-red, though...that makes up for it, right? I'll be honest, it reminded me of that awesome gift-from-God show Batman the Animated series.
The creators of the show DID do an excellent job in characterization. If anyone has ever read the new 52 batman, then they will find some similarities with the dynamics between Bruce and the new Alfred. This Alfred is an ex-agent now turned Butler who acts as a protector for Bruce Wayne. He is much more active in this series than in other series, even opting to join in on the action. Katana hasn't been revealed yet so it's unknown how her interaction with Bruce will be.
The show's villains, Professor Pyg and Mr. Toad are two characters that I can only describe as Bizarre. Obviously the villains had to be toned down for the show, in the comics Pyg runs a "doll-house" where he turns his victims into Annie type dolls by melting their faces and reattaching a doll face onto the flesh. In this episode they were seen hunting down someone with an elephant gun.
The art style overall was very sleek. I didn't have an initial problem and it will take some time for viewers to become comfortable with this particular style of choice. Some old Young Justice fans still aren't ready to accept this show on their DC nation block list, but like Teen Titans Go, it will prove to be a good program worthy of taking the place of a great show.
Overall, the show started off very well and I think I might take it upon myself to continue watching it. So stay tuned for more updates.
